On this Memorial-Day weekend, New Jersey hosted several well-attended and challenging races. On Saturday was the Hills of Somerset County, an 80-mile road race with a demanding course that started and finished in Somerville, NJ. Sunday was the Bound Brook Criterium, which Pollo had won in '04 and '05. Then Monday was the Tour of Somerville, the oldest race in the country.
In the Somerset Road Race, an early breakaway (containing 5 riders, including former Mengoni riders Lisban Quintero (CRCA/Empire) and Gavi Epstein (CRCA/Sakonnet)) got a big gap on the field, and looked to be a dangerous move. But they were pulled back after 50 miles of racing. Over the race's final climb, Mike Norton (Rite Aid) and Alberto Blanco broke away from the field and stayed away to contest the win in a two-up sprint. In a tight sprint, Alberto got 2nd. In the field sprint behind, Lisban got 5th even after being in the long, early breakaway. (Photos)
