The GS Mengoni USA cycling team continued on its upward trajectory towards success this past weekend. In Saturday's Grant's Tomb criterium in Manhattan, NY, Mengoni's ace sprinter, Rosevelt "Pollo" Marte took an impressive 4th place in a competitive field. A two-man escape eluded the peloton, as Pollo snagged second in the big bunch gallop to the line.

In Sunday's New York City Spring Series race, Pollo, the current series overall leader, escaped in an 11-rider breakaway midway through the race. Also making the move was new edition to the squad, Lisban Quintero. A fierce sprinter, Quintero will surely mold nicely into GS Mengoni's fortified arsenal of riders.

The move gained 40 seconds when, during the final lap, the large break started playing cat-and-mouse games. Meanwhile, Mengoni riders Eugene Boronow and Jason Schneider, both of whom attacked after the start/finish line with one lap remaining, bridged across to the leaders two miles from the finish.

The men in red immediately formed their lead-out train in the now 13-rider group. However, in the run-in to the finish, two opponents representing an Axis team managed to squirt by Pollo in the sprint. Pollo finished third on the day, thus enabling him to keep his green and yellow leaders jersey. Quintero managed fourth.

"We're right where we want to be," said a high ranking official in the GS Mengoni administration. "Considering Pollo has the leader's jersey without having top-notch form is fantastic-- for us." Pollo, however, is indeed on the cusp of reaching good-form.

"We’re currently devising a strategy to improve our efficiency in the coming weeks and consolidate his [Pollo’s] overall win,” he concluded.  The official wouldn't provide specifics.
