Mengoni's Eugene Boronow finished the stage-1 time
trial in 21st place, which put him
in with a chance for a high GC (general classification) place in the
four-day race. The oppor-
tunity came in the 104-mile road race of stage 3, where the mood of the
race allowed for some
tactical play. After several breakaway groups had failed to stay away
from the field
(nothing stayed away without the consent of Colavita or Navigators),
Michael Cody (NCC)
attacked the field and broke away solo. Soon after, Boronow did the same
thing, and the
two riders rode the next 12 miles ahead of the field, but 20 seconds
apart from each other.
Later, a group of 7 riders cut loose from the field, joined Boronow and
Cody, and stayed
away until the finish. From this group, Boronow finished in 8th place
and moved into
8th on the GC. After the last stage was completed, Boronow finished the
4-day event in
7th place on GC.
In the stage-4 criterium (50 miles), there were several sprint prizes
being awarded, which were
collected in a pass-the-hat fashion. Among these was a $450 prime, which
Pollo won handily.
The money (mostly singles, and some change) was given to him in two
large ziploc bags.
Notes:
The Navigators team won three stages with three different riders.
Mark McCormack (Colavita) won the overall without winning a stage. This
was also his first
time winning this race.
