Stage 1: Three-mile uphill Time Trial
Jason Bremer was our best-placed rider in 14th.
Stage 2: 86-mile Road Race.
There were many early attacks, and Bremer got into the break that stuck
for the next 70 miles. He and his three companions gained a maximum
advantage of about three minutes, but were caught late in the race. Just
before the last climb (20 miles to go), a group of 8 got away, including
Eugene Boronow. Unfortunately, this group caught and passed Bremer, who
had lost contact with the two remaining breakaway riders. Half-way up
the last climb, Scottie Weiss led a small group which merged with
Boronow’s group, and eventually caught the 2 leaders. Boronow got 7th on
the stage and moved into 8th on GC. Bremer, having taken an admirable
risk, finished far behind.
Stage 3: 108-mile Road Race
70 miles into the race was the climb of Montebello Gap, where the field
was shredded to pieces. Jasons Bremer and Schneider were in the second
group after the climb, and Boronow was in the third. Bremer finished
11th on the stage, Schneider moved into 13th on GC, and Boronow, having
been in the 3rd group, dropped to 18th on GC.
Stage 4: Downtown Criterium
A few riders escaped the field from the gun, and were joined two laps
later by Bremer. Eventually, Bremer got away from his companions and
soloed for the next 30 laps (of 38) to win alone (whoa!). There was a
good chase put on by the TIAA-Cref team, but Bremer couldn’t be caught.
Late in the race, Jason Schneider escaped with Trent Hornus (US Armed
Forces) and finished in 2nd place. Schneider also moved into 11th on GC.
