Weekend Battles in Brooklyn - Sunday, April 18, 2004 at 11:51
The rivalry between teams Toga and Mengoni continued this weekend, beginning with Saturday's Kissena Series race in Brooklyn. A group of 7 riders escaped early in the race and held a 30-50 second advantage for many miles, but that group returned to the pack late in the race. With 12 miles remaining in the 50-mile event, 7 other riders got away, including Melito Heredia (Toga), Eugene Boronow and Jason Bremer (G.S. Mengoni), John Tomlinson (CRCA/Conrad's), Davis Sommerville (Ideal Tile), (Northeastern Hardware), and Alvaro Tardaquilo(UPMC). In the final miles, Bremer and Boronow attacked the group repeatedly but were brought back each time by the vigilance of those in the breakaway. In the end, Heredia beat the group, followed by Tardaquilo, Bremer, and Boronow.
Results:
1. Melito Heredia, Toga
2. Alvaro Tardaquilo, UPMC
3. Jason Bremer, G.S. Mengoni
4. Eugene Boronow, G.S. Mengoni
5. David Sommerville, Ideal Tile
6. Northeastern Hardware
7. John Tomlinson, CRCA/Conrad's

In Sunday's Spring Series race the Toga team attacked relentlessly, knowing that the Mengoni team would be riding for their man, Roosevelt "Pollo" Martes. As a result, the Mengoni team spent much of the race at the front trying to control the numerous groups that were escaping periodically. Mid-way throught the race, a group of 3 riders, Igor Misicki (Watchung Wheelmen), Sergio Rolando (Toga), and Xavier Melendez (CRCA/Next), got clear and steadily increased its advantage on the field. Although the Mengoni team chased, the trio stayed away to win. Behind the 3 winners, a well-timed attack by Tony Settel (CRCA/Conrad's) pulled a small group away from the field, which included Pollo, Heredia, and Morel. Pollo beat this group, earning 4th place in the race. The rest of the field (significantly smaller by the end) followed by about 15 seconds.
Results:
1. Igor Misicki, Watchung Wheelmen
2. Xavier Melendez, CRCA/Next
3. Sergio Rolando, Toga
4. Rosevelt Martes, G.S. Mengoni
5. Melito Heredia, Toga
6. Edwin Morel, Toga
7. Tony Settel, CRCA/Conrad's

Notes:

Bernie McGarry (CTS) still leads the Spring Series from the master's field by 40 points over Pollo. For Pollo to win the series, he would have to place in the top 8 next week, while McGarry would have to be shut out of the points entirely. It's an unlikely senario, but stranger things have happened.

During the race, there was an altercation between the biggest rider in the field and one of the smallest. It must have been interesting to watch.
